Was discussing this with my children (read that as boring them to death) and was thinking it would be interesting to see what songs people pick as their favorite/most moving/most meaningful/best remembered/etc. protest song.
I will start this off with one of mine:
Two Hangmen by Mason Proffit

Re: Protest Songs
Tue, August 4, 2009 - 6:06 PMBlowing in the Wind pops right up as one of the most beautiful. I heard it by Peter, Paul and Mary before I heard Dylan's original. And Joan Baez's version is very sweet.

Thu, November 19, 2009 - 9:45 AMThe Great Mandala by PP&M. It was on the flip side of some 45 single that turned up in redneck diners (I Dig Rock and Roll Music, I think) You could play it and run before you got your butt kicked. -

Mon, October 26, 2009 - 11:47 AM‘stop, children, what's that sound’
by Buffalo Springfield
www.youtube.com/watch
There's something happening here
What it is ain't exactly clear
There's a man with a gun over there
Telling me i got to beware
I think it's time we stop, children, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down
There's battle lines being drawn
Nobody's right if everybody's wrong
Young people speaking their minds
Getting so much resistance from behind
I think it's time we stop, hey, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down
What a field-day for the heat
A thousand people in the street
Singing songs and carrying signs
Mostly say, hooray for our side
It's time we stop, hey, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down
Paranoia strikes deep
Into your life it will creep
It starts when you're always afraid
You step out of line, the man come and take you away
We better stop, hey, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down
Stop, hey, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down
Stop, now, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down
Stop, children, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down!!!

Re: Protest Songs in terms of making the political part of one's reality
Tue, December 8, 2009 - 2:21 AMLook out of any window
any morning, any evening, any day
Maybe the sun is shining
birds are winging or
rain is falling from a heavy sky -
What do you want me to do,
to do for you to see you through?
this is all a dream we dreamed
one afternoon long ago
Walk out of any doorway
feel your way, feel your way
like the day before
Maybe you'll find direction
around some corner
where it's been waiting to meet you -
What do you want me to do,
to watch for you while you're sleeping?
Well please don't be surprised
when you find me dreaming too
Look into any eyes
you find by you, you can see
clear through to another day
I know it's been seen before
through other eyes on other days
while going home --
What do you want me to do,
to do for you to see you through?
It's all a dream we dreamed
one afternoon long ago
Walk into splintered sunlight
Inch your way through dead dreams
to another land
Maybe you're tired and broken
Your tongue is twisted
with words half spoken
and thoughts unclear
What do you want me to do
to do for you to see you through
A a box of rain will ease the pain
and love will see you through
Just a box of rain -
wind and water -
Believe it if you need it,
if you don't just pass it on
Sun and shower -
Wind and rain -
in and out the window
like a moth before a flame
It's just a box of rain
I don't know who put it there
Believe it if you need it
or leave it if you dare
But it's just a box of rain
or a ribbon for your hair
Such a long long time to be gone
and a short time to be there
Robert Hunter/Jerry Garcia
