Every day...or a few times a day, I hear old songs in my head. Right now it's: I heard it through the grapevine!
What's yours?

Re: Old songs in your head
Tue, September 13, 2005 - 10:14 PMWell...LOL!...NOW it's "I Heard It Through The Grapevine!"
Earlier today, someone gave me a cd at work to listen to. It was really dreadful but, on one of the cuts there was a vague attempt to have a Beach Boys type harmony. So, for part of the day, I had "In My Room" looping in my brain.

Re: Old songs in your head
Wed, September 14, 2005 - 10:16 PMI love that song! I'm an ardent collector of music, and I have zillions of the old "AM Gold" hits that my parents' radio station played. For some reason, these are the songs that just get stuck in your head...remember:
3 Dog Night - Just an Old Fashioned Love Song
Bo Donaldson - Billy, Don't be a Hero
Gary Wright - Dream Weaver
Nick Gilder (I think) - Hot Child in the City
Maria Muldaur - Midnight at the Oasis
Phoebe Snow - Poetry Man
Hues Corp - Rock the Boat
Terry Jacks - Seasons in the Sun
Paper Lace - The Night Chicago Died
Everything by America (Tin Man is my fave)
Carly Simon - You're so Vain
Now tell me you don't have at least one of these going through your head right now!! :) -

Today April 3, 2006
Mon, April 3, 2006 - 3:06 PMBeen doing good today with my eating. down one more lb. this week. The low carb is working for me but in a more modified way than I was eating. I now eat some fresh fruit and whole wheat and bran and brown rice. I am feeling better to eating like this and watching my portion sizes and cutting my calories to 1200 a day.
Hope I can get the rest of this weight off this year. My FIT FOR LIFE group I belong to has helped me so much to see what I was doing wrong with the low carb.
I know I can keep this up now. -

Sat, April 22, 2006 - 8:47 PMOKay, I just joined this tribe and I have to let you all know that any of the songs you mentioned could have been candidates for the songs that come into my head, except maye the Tears for Fears post. Me and Bobby McGee be the Dead! Woo Hoo, now that brings back some memories.... or are those the flashbacks they always promised??
Here are a few others I have had playing in my head from time to time and I wonder where I heard them recently, because I don't listen to the oldies station.
Who's peekin out from under the stairway, smilin' at everybody she sees?...
Michelle, Ma Belle, These are words that go together well, My Michelle...
Raindrops Keep Fallin' on my head...
Imagine me and you, I do, I think about you day and night, it's only right...
OK there are a couple of advertisements that have to creep in to my list, too
MMMM mmmm good, MMMMMM mmmmm good ....
I am stuck on bandaid 'cause ....
You can go ahead and finish them all. Sorry if I reminded you of something you really didn't want in your head. -

Tue, June 27, 2006 - 10:53 PMDeb, I was in the midst of making a huge batch of slaw for a friends Pink Party, the night before the Gay Pride parade in S.F.,, having a Manhattan to soothe the chopping, dicing.slicing. grating vigorous energy necesary to accomplish the task, and the BF had some old music from '93 mix tape he had made, playing, and Cheap Trick came on, had to leave the kitchen to sing and dance for a bit, and was laughing my ass off when it was over! Made finishing the slaw so much easier.
Back story, we both are in our 50's and both saw them perform in San Francisco in the 80's,, before we knew each other! AWwwwww Shucks! -

Re: Old songs in your head
Wed, June 28, 2006 - 10:17 PMAt Seventeen by Janis Ian
I learned the truth at seventeen
That love was meant for beauty queens
And high school girls with clear skinned smiles
Who married young and then retired.
The valentines I never knew
The Friday night charades of youth
Were spent on one more beautiful
At seventeen I learned the truth.
And those of us with ravaged faces
Lacking in the social graces
Desperately remained at home
Inventing lovers on the phone
Who called to say come dance with me
and murmured vague obscenities
It isn't all it seems
At seventeen.
A brown eyed girl in hand me downs
Whose name I never could pronounce
said, Pity please the ones who serve
They only get what they deserve.
The rich relationed hometown queen
Married into what she needs
A guarantee of company
And haven for the elderly.
Remember those who win the game
Lose the love they sought to gain
Indebentures of quality
And dubious integrity.
Their small town eyes will gape at you
in dull surprise when payment due
Exceeds accounts received
At seventeen.
To those of us who know the pain
Of valentines that never came,
And those whose names were never called
When choosing sides for basketball.
It was long ago and far away
The world was younger than today
And dreams were all they gave for free
To ugly duckling girls like me.
We all play the game and when we dare
To cheat ourselves at solitaire
Inventing lovers on the phone
Repenting other lives unknown
That call and say, come dance with me
and murmur vague obscenities
At ugly girls like me
At seventeen -

Re: Old songs in your head
Fri, December 29, 2006 - 3:18 PMI have no idea why the following song has been in my head now for a couple of months....
LAY DOWN (CANDLES IN THE RAIN) - Lyrics
LAY DOWN, LAY DOWN, LAY IT ALL DOWN,
LET YOUR WHITE BIRDS SMILE UP
AT THE ONES WHO STAND AND FROWN.
LAY DOWN, LAY DOWN, LAY IT ALL DOWN,
LET YOUR WHITE BIRDS SMILE UP
AT THE ONES WHO STAND AND FROWN.
WE WERE SO CLOSE, THERE WAS NO ROOM,
WE BLED INSIDE EACH OTHER`S WOUNDS.
WE ALL HAD CAUGHT THE SAME DISEASE,
AND WE ALL SANG THE SONGS OF PEACE.
LAY DOWN, LAY DOWN, LAY IT ALL DOWN,
LET YOUR WHITE BIRDS SMILE UP
AT THE ONES WHO STAND AND FROWN.
LAY DOWN, LAY DOWN, LAY IT ALL DOWN,
LET YOUR WHITE BIRDS SMILE UP
AT THE ONES WHO STAND AND FROWN.
SO RAISE THE CANDLES HIGH,
`CAUSE IF YOU DON`T,
WE COULD STAY BLACK AGAINST THE NIGHT.
SO RAISE THEM HIGHER AGAIN,
AND IF YOU DO WE COULD STAY DRY AGAINST THE RAIN.
LAY DOWN, LAY DOWN, LAY IT ALL DOWN,
LET YOUR WHITE BIRDS SMILE UP
AT THE ONES WHO STAND AND FROWN.
LAY DOWN, LAY DOWN, LAY IT ALL DOWN,
LET YOUR WHITE BIRDS SMILE UP
AT THE ONES WHO STAND AND FROWN.
SOME CAME TO SING, SOME CAME TO PRAY.
SOME CAME TO KEEP THE DARK AWAY.
SO RAISE THE CANDLES HIGH,
`CAUSE IF YOU DON`T,
WE COULD STAY BLACK AGAINST THE NIGHT.
SO RAISE THEM HIGHER AGAIN,
AND IF YOU DO WE COULD STAY DRY AGAINST THE RAIN.
LAY DOWN, LAY DOWN, LAY IT ALL DOWN,
LET YOUR WHITE BIRDS SMILE UP
AT THE ONES WHO STAND AND FROWN.
LAY DOWN, LAY DOWN, LAY IT ALL DOWN,
LET YOUR WHITE BIRDS SMILE UP
AT THE ONES WHO STAND AND FROWN. -

By the way, I'm new here. My name's Kathy. I'm 45. The youngest of 3 so I got my dose of music from the 60s and 70s and still love it.

Baby you ain't right to stop me

Do you remember the stir the album cover caused back then?
Sun, May 6, 2007 - 7:02 AMYes I do, the Red head holding the hood ornament from a car from the fifties and she was topless, I have both covers on topless and one covered up.... Do you have the CD? it sounds so much better... and has extra cut....
How about Robin Trower? Bridge of sighs.... very moody great one to watch the sunset... with some herb i might add... -
-
Re: Do you remember the stir the album cover caused back then?
Sun, May 6, 2007 - 5:39 PMYes I have the CD I listen to it a lot. I'm not a big fan of Robin Tower; however I did see him perform in Germany about 2 years ago. Without the herb though. LOL -

Re: Do you remember the stir the album cover caused back then?
Mon, May 7, 2007 - 12:44 PMSome of the young music today is really good in a very different way... More splintered or niches most I don't have a clue about... but every now and again I'll here some stuff I really like ...Example Fred Durst and staid, Linkin Park and Evanescence...
So of this stuff makes me want to paint my finger nails black, dye my hair fire engine red and stay out of the sun in some mothers basement... oh the angst of youth... I liked it better when we just worried about getting laid and with who....
Having said that I still like a lot of this dark music very much... Here's one of my favorites now....

Hey Me Too!!!!!
Fri, May 11, 2007 - 2:01 PMAre you my other half? I listen to KROQ every morning before leaving for work, hence I also have Staind, Linkin Park. Thirty Seconds to Mars, Incubus and the Killers in my CD collection.
My hair has been every color since my Punk days in the early 80's. I never go in the sun, which is very funny since I will be going to Burning Man for the first time this August. LOL I am going to fry. And since I am single again I still worry about getting laid.
OMG I'm a 54 year old teenager.
I hadn't heard that Evanescence Song before. I like. I haven't heard much of them since the first hit which I also liked. Thanks for the heads up. -

Sun, May 20, 2007 - 11:00 AMUh, actually that was Gram Parsons, who DID play in the Burrito Bros. But if I remember correctly, Phil Kaufmann, roadie extraordinaire, is the one who stole Parsons body, took it to the desert and cremated it.

Re: Old songs in your head
Sat, November 10, 2007 - 12:55 PMI was born in 1966. I just heard "Summer in the City" when I read this question. I often hear "Yellow Submarine". The Beattles are my favorite. I am sure their music was playing near me around the time of my birth. Lots of old Motown. I grew up there. I am sure there are plenty more. I remember seeing an album with a girl on the cover naked and handcuffed by police. I am not sure who the group was. It makes sense I have feminist and free thinking qualities. -

Re: Old songs in your head
Tue, November 13, 2007 - 3:13 PMI love this song and it is always with me. I think he wrote it about himself.
"Like A Rolling Stone" by Bob Dylan
Once upon a time you dressed so fine
You threw the bums a dime in your prime, didn't you ?
People'd call, say, "Beware doll, you're bound to fall"
You thought they were all kiddin' you
You used to laugh about
Everybody that was hangin' out
Now you don't talk so loud
Now you don't seem so proud
About having to be scrounging for your next meal.
How does it feel
How does it feel
To be without a home
Like a complete unknown
Like a rolling stone ?
You've gone to the finest school all right, Miss Lonely
But you know you only used to get juiced in it
And nobody has ever taught you how to live on the street
And now you find out you're gonna have to get used to it
You said you'd never compromise
With the mystery tramp, but know you realize
He's not selling any alibis
As you stare into the vacuum of his eyes
And say do you want to make a deal?
How does it feel
How does it feel
To be on your own
With no direction home
Like a complete unknown
Like a rolling stone ?
You never turned around to see the frowns on the jugglers and the clowns
When they all come down and did tricks for you
You never understood that it ain't no good
You shouldn't let other people get your kicks for you
You used to ride on the chrome horse with your diplomat
Who carried on his shoulder a Siamese cat
Ain't it hard when you discover that
He really wasn't where it's at
After he took from you everything he could steal.
How does it feel
How does it feel
To be on your own
With no direction home
Like a complete unknown
Like a rolling stone ?
Princess on the steeple and all the pretty people
They're drinkin', thinkin' that they got it made
Exchanging all precious gifts
But you'd better take your diamond ring, you'd better pawn it babe
You used to be so amused
At Napoleon in rags and the language that he used
Go to him now, he calls you, you can't refuse
When you got nothing, you got nothing to lose
You're invisible now, you got no secrets to conceal.
How does it feel
How does it feel
To be on your own
With no direction home
Like a complete unknown
Like a rolling stone ?

Re: Old songs in your head
Sun, December 16, 2007 - 2:02 PM"you're the one" by the vogues (very zippy tune...)... here's the lyrics... when i did a search, i discovered there's many different songs called you're the one... this one, however, is the one that is going thru my head today:
Every time we meet
Everything is sweet
Ooh, you're so tender
I must surrender
My love is your love
Now and forever
You're the one that I long to kiss
Baby, you're the one that I really miss
You're the one that I'm dreaming of
Baby, you're the one that I love
Keep me in your heart
Never let us part
Ooh, never leave me
Please don't deceive me
I want you only
You must believe me
You're the one that I long to kiss.
Baby, you're the one that I really miss.
You're the one that I'm dreaming of
Baby, you're the one that I love.
I adore you
And no one before you
Could make me feel this way
Since I met you
I just can't forget you
I love you more each day
Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah
There may be some tears
Through the coming years
Ooh, all the while
I know you'll be smilin'
You love will guide me
Though every mile 'cause
You're the one that I long to kiss
Baby, you're the one that I really miss
You're the one that I'm dreaming of
Baby, you're the one that I love
(repeat to fade) -

Re: Old songs in your head
Wed, February 13, 2008 - 4:10 PMdanny's song~ kenny loggins (thank you twil) : )
people smile and tell me I'm the lucky one, and we've just begun,
think i'm gonna have a son.
he will be like she and me, as free as a dove, conceived in love,
sun is gonna shine above
even though we ain't got money, i'm so in love with ya honey,
everything will bring a chain of love...
and in the morning when i rise, you bring a tear of joy to my eyes,
and tell me everything is gonna be alright
seems as though a month ago i beta chi, never got high,
oh, i was a sorry guy.
and now a smile, a face, a girl that shares my name,
now i'm through with the game, this boy will never be the same
even though we ain't got money, i'm so in love with ya honey,
everything will bring a chain of love...
and in the morning when i rise, you bring a tear of joy to my eyes,
and tell me everything is gonna be alright
pisces, virgo rising is a very good sign, strong and kind,
and the little boy is mine
now i see a family where there once was none, now we've just begun,
yeah, we're gonna fly to the sun
even though we ain't got money, i'm so in love with ya honey,
everything will bring a chain of love...
and in the morning when i rise, you bring a tear of joy to my eyes,
and tell me everything is gonna be alright
love the girl who holds the world in a paper cup, drink it up,
love her and she'll bring you luck.
and if you find she helps your mind, buddy, take her home,
don't you live alone, try to earn what lovers own
even though we ain't got money, i'm so in love with ya honey,
everything will bring a chain of love...
and in the morning when I rise, you bring a tear of joy to my eyes,
and tell me everything is gonna be alright -

Can't buy me love, love
Can't buy me love
I'll buy you a diamond ring, my friend, if it makes you feel alright
I'll get you anything, my friend, if it makes you feel alright
'Cause I don't care too
Much for money
Money can't buy me love
I'll give you all I've got to give, if you say you love me too
I may not have a lot to give, but what I got I'll give to you
I don't care too
Much for money
Money can't buy me love
Can't buy me love, everybody tells me so
Can't buy me love, no no no, no
Say you don't need no diamond rings, and I'll be satisfied
[Can't Buy Me Love lyrics on www.metrolyrics.com]
Tell me that you want the kind of things, that money just can't buy
I don't care too
Much for money
Money can't buy me love
Can't buy me love, everybody tells me so
Can't buy me love, no no no, no
Say you don't need no diamond rings, and I'll be satisfied
Tell me that you want the kind of things, that money just can't buy
I don't care too
Much for money
Money can't buy me love
Can't buy me love, love
Can't buy me love -

Re: Old songs in your head
Wed, February 27, 2008 - 7:29 AMcrimson flames tied through my ears
rollin' high and mighty traps...
pounced with fire on flaming roads
using ideas as my maps,
"we'll meet on edges, soon..."
said i, proud 'neath the heated brow...
ah, but i was so much older then
i'm younger than that now...
half-cracked prejudice leaped forth
"rip down all hate," i screamed
lies that life is black and white
spoke from my skull, i dreamed...
romantic facts of musketeers
...foundationed deep... somehow...
ah, but I was so much older then
i'm younger than that now...
girls' faces formed the forward path
from phony jealousy
to memorizing politics
of ancient history...
flung down by corpse evangelists
unthought of, thought, somehow...
ah, but i was so much older then
i'm younger than that now...
a self-ordained professor's tongue
too serious to fool
spouted out that liberty
Is just equality in school
"equality..." i spoke the word
as if ... a wedding vow...
ah, but I was so much older then
i'm younger than that now...
in a soldier's stance, iaimed my hand
at the mongrel dogs who teach...
fearing not that I'd become my enemy
...in the instant that i preach...
my existence led by confusion boats
...mutiny... from stern to bow...
ah, but iwas so much older then
i'm younger than that now...
yes, my guard stood hard when abstract threats
too noble to neglect
deceived me into thinking
ihad something to protect
good and bad, i define these terms
...quite clear... no doubt... somehow...
ah, but we were so much older then...
...we're... younger... than... that... now... ! -

and it's working so well…
…that I can't get away…
i'm a lucky fella…
… i've just got to tell her…
that i love her endlessly…
because love grows… where my rosemary goes
…and nobody knows… like… me
there's something about her hand holding mine…
it's a feeling that's fine…
and i just gotta say… hey
she's really got a magical spell !
and it's working so well…
…that i can't get away…
i'm a lucky fella…
…i've just got to tell her…
That I Love Her Endlessly…
Because Love Grows… where my Rosemary Goes
And Nobody Knows… Like Me
(fadeout:)
it keeps growing every place she's been
and nobody knows like me
if you've met her, you'll never forget her
and nobody knows like me
la la la- believe it when you've seen it
and nobody knows like me

more love
smokey robinson and the miracles
(didn't find a you tube for it... my son gave me this link)
search.playlist.com/tracks/m...%20smokey
i was just a young flower child
and my uncle chops was driving me in his mercedes
on some main drag in laguna beach california
and it was night
and the stars were twinkling
and the moon was full
and i felt a little homesick
(i lived in detroit, was visiting him for the summer) . . .
oh, such memories...
Let it be soon, don't hesitate
Make it now, don't wait
Open your heart and let my love come in
I want the moment to start when I can fill your heart with
More love, and more joy
Than age or time could ever destroy
My love is so sound
It would take a hundred lifetimes
To live it down, wear it down, tear it down
This is no fiction
This is no act
This is real, it's fact
I'll always belong only to you
Each day I'll be living to make sure I'm giving you
More love and more joy
Than age or time could ever destroy
And my love is so sound
It'll take about a hundred lifetimes
To live it down, wear it down, tear it down
As we grow older no need to fear
When you need me I'll be here
I'll be beside you every step of the way
With A heart that's truthful and keeping you youthful with
More love, more joy
Than age or time can ever destroy
And my love is so sound
It'll take about a hundred lifetimes
To live it down, wear it down, tear it down

gypsydaze, thank you for that! i left a comment (mentioned your name)

and scotty, i believe i saw him on the same tour,
opening for ginger, jack & eric
the venue was the grande ballroom in detroit
(michigan, not oregon)
and i was standing right at the stage
and he gyrated in my face
and after the show
my girlfriends unmercifully kidded me for weeks
mocking him and jumping all about me
(they were the ones that would go dance their butts off in the back
and i was the one who stayed up front, soaking up every minute)
so thanks for the memories y'all
love it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Old songs in your head
Mon, May 5, 2008 - 5:36 AMI didn't get to see him until Eeyores birthday, in Austin, bout 82/83...
Funny thing growing up, he was just a neighbor down on 12th street, a guy you'd see at the WHole Foods.
It wasn't until later that we found out he was a performance art legend that influenced Eno and Syd Barrett!
My roomate and I also got our mailbox vandalized by Roky Ericson, but that's a whole different story, and an Austin that jes don exist anymore! -

Re: Old songs in your head
Mon, May 5, 2008 - 8:41 AMthank god for this thread and youtube and other video sites that keep my recall in check.....i really enjoy hearing stories and i appreciate being able to see footage from shows i was at...cause there sure are a quite a few that were a blur...and to read other people saying the same thing..well, i know my momentary lapses of reason and brain damage (hehehe) are collectively shared....it's amazing how people can recall every detail of their youth when i don't know what i did yesterday..but once inawhile i'll see these songs and clips and go ahah!!
so thanks guys..
think a new thread ought to be started??? ...one for old songs w/ video moments??? this one is getting LONG.
one thread a few yrs. bavk zane started and it was name that tune, a piece of verse from the 60's..whoever guessed did the next one..it was fun..but of course nopw we can easily google lyrics......kept this tribe active for awhile tho...
thx guys for keeping me forever young....ok 3 song references in here. 2 much coffee. -

i like the thread to stay nice & long
and then i can "search & find"
all in one location
either way, i am open

Mon, May 5, 2008 - 8:54 AMi am looking for a nice peace sign symbol to wear around, there are a lot of nice peaces around, but i'd like one that gives me that bright feeling...
so... not to small, not to heavy... i'm sure i'll find more in my quest : )
huggs everyone... -
-
Re: Old songs in your head
Mon, May 5, 2008 - 9:20 AMaurElia, i didn't know about the search an find clause or how to use it...cause this child of the 60's figures out how it works via trial and error and doesn't realize that there maybe other ways...so..now i got to figure them out...i was more on the scroll down page end lazy train..
and d"ner. i have a cool peace sign in my photos...but when i'm in search of: hippie.com sometimes has what i'm looking for. unless of course you prefer old school art and music festivals....... -

Re: Old songs in your head
Wed, May 27, 2009 - 10:25 PMHe's a real nowhere man,
sitting in his nowhere land
writing all his nowhere songs
for no body.
Doesn't have a point of view
Knows not where he's going to
Isn't that a lot like me and you?
One pill makes you larger
And one pill makes you small
and the ones that mother gives you
don't do anything at all
Go ask Alice
When she's ten feet tall
Hey! Mister Tamborine man play a song for me
I'm not sleepy and there ain't no place I'm going to
Slow down, you move too fast
Gotta make the morning last
If you're going to San Fran-cisco
Be aure to wear some flowers in your hair
Morning, Girl
How did you sleep last night
You're several ages older now
You just kinda wasted my precious time
Don't think twice, it's alright
All the leaves are brown, and the skies are grey
California Dreamin on a Winter's day

Re: Old songs in your head
Fri, August 21, 2009 - 8:37 PMI must confess that experience taught me that the Rolling Stones "you can't always get what you want..but if you try sometimes, you just might find, you get what you need!" was a much better guide to living in the real world than "All You need is love" or even the "Love is bt a song we sing"...life turned out to be a complex dance of light and shadow. thing is, i think the Beatles knew it too.
there;s nothing as catchy as a grateful Dead string-band era tune though, like the Workingman's Dead/American Beauty songs...
"Sugar magnolia, blossoms bloomin', heads all empty and I don't care!" -

Re: Old songs in your head
Fri, August 28, 2009 - 5:08 PMOK. So I'm watching TV and see that John Stamos is in a revival of Bye Bye Birdie. My high school in Jacksonville, FL, did that musical in the early 60s...and did it so well people from around town, at other schools, were coming to see it when the run was extended. I had the record. But it seemed totally square to my late 60s hipness.
So anyway, I'm hearing "A Lot Of Livin' To Do" over and over in my head again... after all these years.
Soon I'll be singing the "hymn"
"Ed Sullivan!
Ed Sullivan!
We're going to be on
Ed Sullivan." -
